Some people enjoy watching soap operas because it allows them to escape from reality. I am not sure about people here in the US, but I know that people in my native country - Ukraine - are preoccupied with soap operas.
Unfortunately, sometimes people start living in those soap operas, without even realizing it. They worry about the characters as if they were relatives or friends. Even more, some people imagine themselves being those characters. The identification with character becomes so great that the lines between reality and TV become blurred.
However, as time passes, the real life problems not only don't get solved, but accumulate and worsen. Simply because people, engulfed by imaginary life, forget to live for real.

Hi! I think I understand your idea. It seems some people prefer to watch movies instead of to live real life. When you watch a movie, you can imagine you are a superhero and you are able to overcome any difficulties. It looks like a way to escape from reality....
